The Third Sunday of Advent

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!” (Phil 4:4) This weekend we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, otherwise known as Rejoice Sunday. It Is a day where I put away the penitential purple robes and put on the joyful rose-coloured robes because, as St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading, “the Lord is near.” (Phil 4:5)

This weekend Advent moves from the theme of the “the Lord is coming” to the theme of “the Lord is near.”  After all, we are now only two weeks away from Christmas Day and the arrival of the baby Jesus. This same baby Jesus, who as an adult, took on the burden of our sins, died for the forgiveness of our sins and gave us the promise of eternal life by rising from the dead. Therefore we rejoice. We have nothing to fear. Our scripture readings for this Sunday should lighten our mood and fill us with a sense of joyous anticipation.

In this time of a global pandemic and with new concerns about the Omicron variant, the focus of our anticipation is often on the negative and fearful. Let this celebration of the Third Sunday of Advent be a reminder that the God who loves us is still in control and that we should await his coming not with trepidation, but with rising joy.

Over the next couple of weeks I encourage you to follow the advice of St. Paul and make "your kindness known to all". I look forward to seeing you at Mass this weekend and please check out the Worship section below for Mass times and public health requirements as we continue to be attentive to our neighbour’s safety.

God bless you folks, Father Gerard

PS: If your Christmas Mass plans change, please be sure to go back to the Mass registration system and cancel or modify your booking so that others might attend.

Sunday Reflection: Joy

The liturgical color for this week is rose (or pink) as a reminder to “wake up!”  It’s a call to snap out of complacency and prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord, to prepare ourselves with JOY!  “Cry out with joy!” we hear in Isaiah 12, for “the Lord is in our midst,” writes Zephaniah.

Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit!  Joy goes beyond mere moments of happiness that come and go.

In our Sunday Gospel we hear that John the Baptist brought good, joyful news to his followers:“...one mightier than I is coming! I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire!”

Ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of joy this Advent and may we all be witnesses of that joy.

"We have seen the true Light, we have received the heavenly Spirit, we have found the true faith."  Byzantine Liturgy, Vespers during Pentecost

Questions for Additional Reflection:

  • How is Joy different than Happiness?
  • Have you ever experienced real joy?  Even in a time of suffering or trial?
  • What's one thing you can do to live joyfully this week?

It’s finally here! Christmas time is here! Or is it?

While Christmas is getting close, it isn’t here quite yet. Instead, we are in a period of waiting, a time of preparation and longing. We are in the Advent season.
So before you jump into your favorite Christmas playlist, try as a family to listen to some beautiful Advent carols and songs, to really prepare your hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Here are a few you can enjoy:

‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ -
LISTEN or LISTEN in LATIN

‘Light of the World’ - LISTEN

‘Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus’ - LISTEN

‘Love Comes Down’ - LISTEN

‘O Come, Divine Messiah’ - LISTEN

‘You’ll Come’ - LISTEN

‘Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence’ - LISTEN

‘Breath of Heaven’ - LISTEN

What is your favorite Advent song to listen to as a family?
