Peace
be with you! I hope that you are getting out and enjoying this
beautiful summer weather. This Sunday’s second reading contains some
simple, yet profound guidance from St. Paul as to how we are to live
our lives. He tells us that “the whole law is fulfilled in one
statement, namely, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Gal
5:14) He then goes on to tell us how the best way we can achieve this
is to be guided by the Spirit and not the flesh.

To
illustrate this point further, a parishioner who had recently
returned from hiking the Camino de Santiago, shared a discussion he
had with an wise old Priest at the end of a long day of walking along
the Camino in northern Spain. They were talking back and forth about
the meaning and the purpose of life and the “Christian way” to lead
life. Many ideas were discussed including the Ten Commandments, the
Beatitudes and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But at the
end of the conversation the Priest turned to the parishioner and
said, “For me it is very simple. When you get to the gates of heaven,
you will be asked only one question, ‘Have you loved?'”
As
Pope Francis says, “Love is the greatest power for the transformation
of reality because it pulls down the walls of selfishness and fills
the ditches that keep us apart.” Let us always remember to lead with
love. Reach out and touch someone today with love.
God
bless you folks, Father Gerard

Just
as Elijah calls Elisha to be the next prophet, putting his cloak
around him (a symbol of his authority passing on), Jesus calls us to
put on his yoke and follow him in discipleship.
The
yoke that holds oxen together was a well-understood metaphor in the
ancient world. St. Paul tells us not to "submit again to the
yoke of slavery" (Gal. 5:1), but it's easy to look back to a
life of comfort and pleasure, especially when faced with the
prosecution that following Christ entails. But when God calls
us, we must follow for there lies the only path to life in
abundance!
We
invite you to watch this video below from Bishop Barron on the call
to discipleship, to take up the yoke that Jesus is offering :
"Even
if our dwelling place here below is wasting away, we have an eternal
dwelling place which God has already prepared in Christ, in his
body."
Pope Francis
